Five Things to Ask your Wedding DJ

HEY MR. DJ - FIVE THINGS TO TALK TO YOUR DJ ABOUT BEFORE YOUR WEDDING

I am not a DJ, I am photographer so let's make that clear from the get go but with my experience as a wedding photographer I have seen several different "hurdles" during couples' big day. While I am a wedding photographer it's more like personal assistant, coordinator, hype girl and everything else in between at a wedding I want to share as much information I can on having a smooth wedding day.

Now as I type I am thinking to myself that there is no perfect wedding day - really. Looking back on it, it seems "perfect" and that's because we don't share the behind the scenes like the pastor saying the wrong names, the melting cake, the DJ not knowing what your songs are - and so much more.

I love a good DJ at a wedding - the music, the lights, and if everyone is dancing I am in heaven. So today we are talking about DJs at your wedding and some tips on how to make your experience a little more seamless.

Things to discuss with your DJ prior to the wedding

How to pronounce names

I know it seems simple but do yourself a favor and just go over it, because you can and should to try and avoid any all mistakes. This includes the couples' names plus anyone the DJ may announce maybe parents and bridal party members for speeches. This really may be helpful in the long run.

What specific songs you want

If you are planning a procession, a first dance with your new spouse of parents you need to pick those songs out prior to the wedding day. Yes, I have seen couples choose these songs right before the dances - skip the stress. Figure out these songs ahead of time and incorporate them into your timeline! Easy right. If you give it to the DJ ahead of time, he could even prep ahead. These may also include songs that may not be specific for first dances but songs you for sure want to be played. It may be dance songs, or genre but communicate this with your DJ.

What time are they are done

If this isn't clear on your timeline you need to be on the same page with your DJ about when they are leaving. You probably don't want to be doing the Electric Slide with your guests when the DJ has to pack up their lights and leave right after. Talk about it first and know what time they are leaving so you know when you can start wrapping up. On a side note, you need to know if there is a noise ordinance where you are getting married and how that may apply to you!

NO NO Songs

If there are songs you DO NOT want make sure you tell your DJ. If that means you don't want curse words or only certain types of music you need to communicate that with your DJ to make sure you two are a good fit. I was at one wedding where they had more kid friendly songs until a certain time and then all songs were allowed. This is based solely on how you want your wedding to be. This is important because you don't want a song to come on you don't want and have to rush to the DJ booth.

A timeline

Share the timeline with the DJ! You should already have one prepared by the wedding day and this is something the DJ needs! This allows them to see the timelines and know what to expect and at what times. Plus if they are going to MC they certainly need it. Don't skip the DJ on this.
