When Should You Get Family Photos Taken?
Have you asked yourself when to get family photos taken? When is the best time?
As an East Idaho Family Photographer I experience all four seasons, in Salmon, we get hot high double-digit summers and chilly double-digit winters and everything in between. We have some beautiful weather with some breathtaking views of mountains and rivers but sometimes our fall is short and spring is non-existent.
When booking you family session it is always best to go by what works for your family.
If you are busy with fall sports and school starting autumn may not be the best time. If you have more of a relaxed summer schedule that may work, it really depends on your family and what you want.
My favorite seasons to photograph families are spring and fall.
The light is beautiful but also the sun sets just a little earlier that allows you to get those golden hour photos without waiting until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. at night. Now don't get me wrong, I love summer seasons BUT if you have young children you may not want summer since mornings may be your only option if your young children can't handle a later night session.
If you are wanting a specific "look" like fall or winter then clearly that's when you need to schedule. When booking both fall and winter the weather is an huge factor of 'when' to get photos done. Depending on where you live your fall may be short lived. In Salmon our prime fall dates are limited, the leaves change colors to those beautiful golden orange and yellows and then it seems like they are gone within in a few weeks due to wind.
Some families want to that true winter look with snow. I have an entire blog dedicated to prepping children for sessions in the colder months. Winter sessions can be hard for the obvious weather reasons, you don't want to "drag" children to a family session when its cold. Winter sessions have to be scheduled earlier in the year or later. And snow is unpredictable.
When would I get family photos taken?
I would aim toward May to end of June then September thru the beginning of November. July and August family sessions are going to be sunset, late at night but worth it. Family sessions are so important that you should really plan ahead and schedule your session. You children are growing up far to fast to keep putting family photos off.
What Season is Best for Family Photos?
Getting professional family photos taken is a wonderful way to capture memories that will last a lifetime. One of the most important decisions to make when scheduling a family photo session is deciding on the best season to take the photos. Each season offers its unique advantages and challenges when it comes to photography, so let's explore the best season to get family photos taken.
-
Fall: Fall is one of the most popular seasons for family photos, and for good reason. The colorful autumn foliage provides a beautiful backdrop for family photos, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The cooler temperatures also make it more comfortable for families to spend time outside, which is especially important for young children. Fall is also a great season to showcase cozy outfits, such as sweaters and boots.
-
Spring: Spring is another great season for family photos, with blooming flowers and lush greenery creating a beautiful and vibrant background. The mild temperatures make it comfortable to spend time outside, and the natural lighting is often soft and flattering. Spring is a great time to showcase pastel colors and lighter fabrics, which can create a soft and dreamy look in photos.
-
Summer: Summer can be a challenging season for family photos due to the heat and humidity, but it can also be a great time to capture fun and playful images of the family. Beaches, parks, and other outdoor locations can provide a great setting for summer photos, and the bright colors and bold patterns of summer clothing can add a fun and festive feel to the photos.
-
Winter: Winter is a beautiful season for family photos, with snowy landscapes and cozy winter clothing creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. However, winter weather can be unpredictable, so it's important to plan for indoor or outdoor locations that can accommodate any changes in weather. Winter clothing, such as scarves and hats, can also add a fun and festive touch to winter photos.
Each season offers its unique advantages and challenges when it comes to family photos. The best season to get family photos taken depends on your personal preferences, the style you're looking to achieve, and the location and outfits you have in mind. Regardless of the season, professional family photos can be a great way to capture memories and create lasting keepsakes for your family to enjoy for years to come.
