How to Prep Your Kids for Winter Photos + Outfit Ideas
Planning a session in the colder months can be tricky.
Weather is never guaranteed already but in the winter it can just be brutal and then factor in the ages of everyone participating in the photo session. If you have really young ones you may want to hold off on a winter session.
When I say winter sessions can be brutal, that's exactly what I mean - brutal. It's cold. And that may mean that little kids may never "warm" up to me and in general. I know so many families specifically want the snow because it really is so beautiful. So I put together some tips on planning and prepping the kids for a winter session.
Layers - This is key to a winter photo session. When you are planning a winter session you may want to invest in a winter wardrobe or "photo ready" jackets. This may be a pea coat, military jacket or puffy coat. You could pair chunky sweaters with extra layers underneath. This is key to keeping the kids warm during the session. If you feel like you and your partner can handle the cold maybe invest in some "photo ready" coats just for kids.
When you are adding layers, layer their socks too! Add stockings and long sleeve shirts and you can wear hats!
I included some combos by Old Navy! I just chose a couple jackets I liked and they will show you options of outfit ideas.
Play Time - I will implement some fun games into the session to get the kids laughing and to stay warm. I want to keep their mind off of the fact that it is cold so let them play! It's okay to play. As the photographer I will pick a place that is suitable for your family and your children's ages to give us the best resources for the best session possible. Encourage the session will be FUN. Tell them we will play games, get them PUMPED.
Bring Warm Drinks - Pack some hot chocolate in a thermos! Keep them warm from the inside out and bring warm drinks. Make it fun with marshmallows! You can bring them from home or stop by a store for a warm up. This will get them excited and keep them warm. You can bring along during the session or keep in the car as an incentive.
Hand/Toe Warmers - These can be great little extras for the session. You can keep the hand warmers in pockets of little ones. You can use the Toe Warmers in your shoes to keep toes warm during the session. They stay warm for hours and are relatively cheap at about $1.25 each. You can keep them in their pockets and they can keep their hands/fingers warm while posing. When you slip them into shoes your toes will stay warm during the session and keep the cold temps at bay. Make sure to read the instructions on the packet first. Also stash some tissue in your pockets for runny noses.
