These kids are such CUTE PATOOTIES! They both did an incredible job during the session, and I couldn’t help but smile throughout our time together. I know that family sessions can feel a little chaotic, especially when younger children are involved. They tend to have their own agenda, which can make it feel like you're wrangling a mini herd of explorers. But let me reassure you – that is completely normal! In fact, it’s a universal experience for so many mothers and families. You're not alone in the whirlwind of capturing moments with your little ones.
When I met with the Balliett Family, we had such a joyful and memorable session. From the moment we started, I could sense that this was going to be one of those sessions where the energy and love of the family would shine through in every photo. One thing that’s become a bit of a mantra for me is KIDS RULE. If you’ve had a session with me before, you know that this is one of my guiding principles. I firmly believe in letting kids be themselves during a shoot. Whether it takes them a few moments to warm up or they dive right into exploring, I’m here for it!
The magic happens when children feel free to roam and express themselves. By letting them get comfortable, the session becomes less about "posing" and more about capturing authentic moments. Sometimes, kids need a little time to adjust, and that's perfectly okay. I like to give them that space to feel at ease with me. Whether they’re the tiniest walker or the tallest in the bunch, my goal is to create a safe and fun environment for everyone to enjoy. I want the experience to feel less like a formal photo shoot and more like a relaxed family adventure.
And that’s exactly what we did with the Balliett Family! We let the kids explore and follow their curiosities, wandering through the beautiful natural surroundings. There’s something so special about capturing a family in their element, allowing life to unfold naturally. The joy, the laughter, and the little moments of connection are what I live for as a photographer. I love when the images reflect the realness of family life – the milestones, the everyday chaos, and the undeniable love that binds it all together.
For this session, we met in the breathtaking Salmon-Challis National Forest. The wide-open space allowed the kids to roam freely, which, at their age, is so important. Letting them explore not only helps them enjoy the experience, but it also brings out their natural personalities, making the photos even more genuine. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting.
The fall colors were just starting to peek through, and I found myself in awe of the mix of vibrant greens and golden yellows that danced across the landscape. There's something so magical about the changing seasons, especially when the environment becomes a canvas for family memories. The contrast between the fresh greens and the warm yellows provided the perfect backdrop for the family’s bond to shine. I love how the tones of the season complement the warmth and love in each family I photograph.
What do you think of the colors? Personally, I adore the way they signal the transition into fall – a time for gathering close and cherishing the little things. As I look back on this session, I can’t help but smile, thinking about the laughter and joy we shared amidst the beauty of the forest.
Family sessions like this remind me why I love what I do. It’s not just about capturing a perfect image – it’s about documenting life as it happens, with all its beautiful, messy, and heartwarming moments.
