What to Wear for Your Fall Family Photos - How to Style Your Family Portraits
One question I get asked a lot as a family photographer - what do we wear? It's not just you. This a struggle for a lot of us. We want something "cute" and potentially new, flattering but how are you going to make it all come together?
Well I have tips for you on picking and putting everyone's outfits together. Sometimes we over think what we are going to wear when really its comes down to just a few steps.
I put some of my favorite pieces from Old Navy below. I also gathered some of my favorite dresses from Love Olive Co. and a lot of them come in 3XL. We are inclusive.
Go thru the tips and tell me what you think in the comments.
Choose a color theme
Having 2-3 colors to center everyone’s look around is a great way to have everyone in your photo look cohesive. Too few colors and you run the risk of boring and bland (white t-shirt kind of thing). Too many and you run the risk of your eye not knowing where to look and the photo feeling “messy."
Don’t think that choosing a couple of main colors means you can only wear those head to toe. Neutrals are a free pass and help to balance out the look!
I left the best fall colors to wear below. Start in your own closet. Is there a piece of clothing you want to start with? Maybe this is a dress of your daughters? Or son's jacket.
I put together some color schemes below so you can get a good visual and hopefully just pick your favorite out - that easy.
Add a pattern
Too many solid colors and the photo can just fade off into the background…you need a pattern that ties all the colors together to make your photo go from okay to great! Since this is a family photo, you want it to be classic, so sticking to prints like stripes and plaid are a good idea. Is everyone doing plaid? Sure, but it’s fall, so who cares!
I included a lot of different patterns to show the variety that you can incorporate but also may look good together. Don't put everyone in patterns but add it.
Layer Up
Whether it’s a fashion post, or now a family fashion post, layering is always something I’m telling people to do. It just elevates the look and takes your outfit up a thousand notches! Adding a pattern is going to take your look from okay to great, and layering is what’s going to take your photo from great to amazing! Easy layering ideas: guys wearing sweaters over plaid shirts, girls wearing vests and cardigans, girls wearing skirts over leggings, etc.
Add texture
Texture adds depth and you don’t have to go crazy…at least one will do! If you’re not a faux fur type of person, don’t worry, not all texture has to be huggable! A cable knit sweater (for a guy or a girl) is a great texture to have! Maybe a pleated jacket or thick sweater.
Consider accessories
And this includes your shoes. Don't skip over the shoes but also think about accessories, like bow, headbands, suspenders, jewelry. I am going to take this time and tell you, a hat is okay but not ideal and don't wear it the entire time, save it for last.
Be comfortable!
This is by far the #1 thing to remember when styling your fall family photos, be comfortable. Yes comfort is key. If you aren't comfortable you are going to be able to see it in the photos. Seriously, I'm not taking comfort in sweat pants but comfort and confidence in what you are wearing in the session.
