Nervous About Senior Portraits? Here are FIVE poses I try to get every. single. time.
You may not believe this but a lot of people actually do not know how to pose their own bodies and faces. It may seem we are all pros at photos with the advancement of technology and the world of selfies but quite a bit of people always ask, "will you help me pose right?"
The answer is always yes.
I don't know about you but I am not standing in front of a mirror all day posing myself and even if your teens are - it's really a lot different when you can no longer see it in camera while you take it. Am I right? When you let go of that cell phone camera, you let go of the ability to double check your clothes, adjust your hair and move how you like. With you are going to let that control go and relax.
This is a lot easier said than done - I know.
But as your senior photographer you gotta trust me and know that with my knowledge and experience and not to mention your number one hyper girl I have your back. I am going to help you move, genuinely smile and forget we are taking photos for a minute and experience the moment of all eyes on you.
I put together FIVE senior girl poses I do nearly every single time.
1. Smize.
Bare with me here. I may be aging myself but long ago I used to binge watch America's Next Top Model with my bestie Tessina. I loved watching the girls pose and the behind the scenes of the photos and seeing them after they were edited was mind blowing at the time. But biggest take away - the smize. Now if you don't know what that is, you need to stop what you are doing and go google how you can accomplish the "smize," thanks to supermodel Tyra Banks. Your Welcome. Did I just age myself with this?
2. Over the Shoulder.
These are cute. They can be fun and flirty and serious and sultry. One of the key to getting great shots with this is knowing the angles and that includes everything from moving your face around and rotating your shoulder. I know what you are thinking: WHAT? Don't worry I am going to "coach" you in moving your face to show off your best angles.
3. Sit.
It's okay to sit. Yes, sit. Think about a potential sitting outfit. Show off that outfit - those cute jeans or shoes. I loved Tori's hat and and the rocks with Wallace Lake at the back drop was a perfect opportunity for her to sit. I will guide you were to put your hands, remind you to relax and smile.
4. Strut.
Work. It. Girl. I love movement. When I say I want you to have fun, I really mean it. I don't want you to just stand there and fell awkward. I am totally going to make you move, to walk and BE YOURSELF. Karissa was such a great sport of moving. I love her arms in this shot and her smile - it looks effortless. But behind the scenes I showed Karissa what I wanted her to do. I didn't leave her hanging on what to do.
5. Smile.
This may be the most important. I will remind you to smile, and to give me a real smile. Believe it or not this can be a struggle for some. Some teens never really grow out of that weird forced smile phase. But one of my main goals is to make you feel comfortable and in return that helps with a natural smile.
